First-Time Cruiser Guide

How Do Cruise Gratuities Work?

Gratuities are one of those cruise things that can catch first-timers off guard because nobody really explains them until you see another charge attached to your vacation.

So let’s clear that up now.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Cruise gratuities are daily service charges that help compensate the crew members taking care of you during your cruise.

Think cabin attendants, dining staff, and other crew members working behind the scenes to keep your vacation running.

The exact amount depends on the cruise line, cabin type, and sometimes the length of your sailing.

Are Gratuities Included in My Cruise Price?

Sometimes.

Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare.

Many do not.

On cruise lines where gratuities are separate, you usually have the option to prepay them before your cruise or have them added to your onboard account during the sailing.

This is one reason I always explain the full cost of a cruise instead of just showing you the pretty little starting price.

Because $599 sounds real cute until we start adding the things nobody mentioned. 😂

Why I Like Prepaying Them

If your cruise line allows it and your budget permits, I usually recommend prepaying gratuities before you sail.

Not because you have to rush and pay everything at once.

I just like knowing as much of the vacation as possible is already handled before you step onboard.

When you prepay, that is one less charge hitting your onboard account during the trip.

You can walk onto the ship knowing that part is already taken care of.

Does That Cover Every Tip?

Not necessarily.

Automatic gratuities cover the standard daily service charge.

Some purchases may have their own gratuity added automatically, including things like drinks, specialty dining, spa services, or room service, depending on the cruise line.

You may also choose to personally tip a crew member who gave you exceptional service.

That part is completely up to you.

So What Should I Budget For?

When we are planning your cruise, I want you looking at more than the cabin price.

We need to know whether gratuities are included or separate so you understand what the vacation will actually cost.

And if you book with me, I’ll tell you.

No surprise math three days before we sail. 😂
