First-Time Cruiser Guide

What’s Actually Included in My Cruise Fare?

You paid for the cruise.

Now what exactly did you pay for?

Because one of the biggest mistakes first-time cruisers make is thinking either everything is included or nothing is included.

The truth is somewhere in the middle.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Your cruise fare usually includes your cabin, plenty of food, entertainment, and access to many of the ship’s activities and public spaces.

You can absolutely get onboard, have a great vacation, and never pay for every upgrade they try to sell you.

But cruise lines also offer plenty of extras.

And baby, they will gladly help you spend some more money. 😂

Your Cabin

Your accommodations are included in the cruise fare.

That includes your room, basic housekeeping service, towels, linens, and the standard amenities that come with your cabin category.

Food

Yes, you can eat without paying extra.

Most cruise ships include several dining options in your fare.

That usually includes places like the main dining room, buffet, and certain casual restaurants or quick-service spots.

The exact restaurants included vary by cruise line and ship.

Specialty restaurants are different.

Steakhouses, upscale restaurants, chef experiences, sushi spots, and other specialty venues may cost extra.

But please do not think you have to pay extra every time you want to eat.

You can eat VERY well on a cruise without booking one specialty restaurant.

Trust me. My cruise stomach has done extensive research. 😂

Entertainment

Most onboard entertainment is included.

That can include theater shows, comedy, live music, karaoke, deck parties, trivia, game shows, and other scheduled activities.

Again, every ship is different.

But you are not buying a ticket every time you walk into a show.

Pools and Public Areas

Standard pools, hot tubs, lounges, decks, and many recreational spaces are included.

Some ships may have premium areas, private retreats, or activities that cost extra.

Kids Clubs

On many family-focused cruise lines, standard youth programming is included for children within the eligible age groups.

Certain late-night programs, babysitting, or specialty activities may cost extra.

Always check your specific cruise line.

What Usually Costs Extra?

This is where people can get carried away.

Alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, spa services, casino play, specialty dining, photos, shopping, and certain activities may cost extra.

Drink packages and Wi-Fi packages can sometimes be purchased before sailing.

Whether those are worth it depends on how you cruise.
